London family photography in Highgate Woods N10

London family photography in Highgate Woods N10

There were so many lovely moments on this shoot when we set out to capture a session of London family photography in Highgate Woods N10.  The day provided a great opportunity to photograph a brother and sister with their mum as a special birthday present for an unsuspecting dad.  Highgate woods is one of only eight green heritage sites in london.  This seventy acre ancient woodland was actually mentioned in the Doomsday Book.  It is a much used and much loved place for local families living in Muswell Hill, East Finchley and Highgate all of which border it.  The woods have many open paths with expansive oak and hornbeam’s reaching for the sky and you cannot enter this wood with children and escape withouth at least some tree climbing taking place!  I always enjoy photographing children when they are caught up in the moment and this brother and sister are very at home in the woods and enthusiastically threw themselves into enjoying everything it has to offer.  I really enjoy the classic feel of the black and white images from this session as well as the softer hues of the colour images as the afternoon light started to fade through the golden hour.  Late afternoon/evening  golden light casts such a warm gentle glow – it is my absolute favourite light to shoot in. Running around and jumping shots tell part of the story of the energy of childhood.  However on this shoot I also captured more thoughtful slower images we towards the end of the afternoon – a lot of that energy had...
Regent’s Park family photoshoot

Regent’s Park family photoshoot

Regents Park was the beautiful setting for this very special NW1 family photoshoot. Half of the family live in the UK and half in Sydney and a visit from Mum and Dad across the water prompted a surprise additional visit from Karen and her fiancé Joel. Karen booked me from Sydney to record a few special hours of the family enjoying some time together, under instruction to not let her sister know about the shoot until the day before. On the day it was such a pleasure to see everyone enjoying having precious time together. Little Charlie was just so thrilled to have so many adoring adults around him and kept everyone entertained. Regent’s Park looks wonderful bathed in warm evening light and as always has so many beautiful locations to choose from. As a London portrait photographer it is always such a delight to enjoy the beautiful parks we are lucky enough to have throughout our city. Within a few days of our portrait session some of the family were heading back off to the other side of the globe again. These are some favourites from the day in Regents park – you can also see more family portrait images in my family and children...
Best of British!!!

Best of British!!!

Old friends, new friends and lots of children running around excitedly together – I had the pleasure of photographing them all, as over 200 adults and children met up recently for a fantastic celebration day for kinship carers in Gulliver’s Land in Milton Keynes.  It was organized by Grandparents plus, which is a national charity that champions the role of grandparents and the wider family in children’s lives, particularly when they take on the role as carers for children in difficult family circumstances.  Grandparents or other relatives often step into provide care for children whose parents may be affected by drug or alcohol abuse, imprisonment or domestic violence.  These carers are usually at a time in their lives when they have not expected to take on additional responsibilities and can struggle with stress, isolation and poverty, as they often receive little financial support and are afraid to ask for help for fear of losing the children they love. There has been a lot of talk in this jubilee and Olympic year about the “best of British” and I think for that you need look no further than the amazing people I met – so many of them at retirement age or well past it caring for one, two or three young children, sometimes with special needs as well.  Grandparents plus has been nominated for a National Lottery good cause award and you can show your support by voting for...
