Image of the week – In the car

This portrait was taken of Sam in one of his favourite places – his car seat.  Like lots of children he spends quite a bit of time in the car and like his Dad, he likes his car!  I enjoy this portrait for many reasons – Sam’s face is lit by that flood of window light and framed by the architecture of the car interior.  Car interiors can be amazing locations for portraits – there are lots of opportunities to find natural framing in the space and if the seats  or walls are a light colour like grey or cream they can act as a great big  reflector to  bounce around all that window light.  Also with young children the fact that they are used to being strapped in their car seats may mean that is is slightly easier to keep them in one place long enough to capture that than in other situations. Image of the week – Sunshine yellow

Image of the week – Sunshine yellow

Walking through a field of shoulder-height flowers is a pretty good way to spend an afternoon…  Hot sunshine and all those blossoms made sure the children were delighted to  immerse themselves in a sea of colour and as far as they were concerned –  pollen be dammed! I took a series of images a few weeks ago in sunny Sussex and just love the vibrancy of that yellow.  Those intense splashes of colour I usually drive past, have bloomed this year for almost twice as long as normal and I could not quite resist the opportunity to get in there.  My preference with children’s portraiture is often for monochrome, partly because it can help keep the focus on the most important elements in the photograph.  However, colour can also be wonderfully evocative and, though the colour in this image is intense, it helps frame the subject rather than distract from her.  Looking at this I can almost convince myself that summer might actually be here! Children’s photography in Alexandra Palace

A seven, five and two year old make for a very busy household.  However photographing this family was a very laid back experience indeed. Whether they were fizzing with energy and jumping around or dreamily chilling out –  they really knew how to get into the spirit of things. They made me laugh when I went back to show them their images, the first question was  – do you have your camera, can we do some more photos? They were already ready for another shoot! These are some of my favourite images from the day – I hope you enjoy...
